Shapen In Iniquity

Cosmically we find ourselves in a very perplexing condition. There are so many elements of life where people are seeking an explanation for the evil and dark things that occur locally and globally. We wonder why bad conditions can be absorbed by the perceivably good. Without an anchored faith in Christ, the earthly world in which we live could only be understood as an ultimate platform of injustice. But through the grace of God, He has an answer. Not everyone is willing to embrace His solutionary scheme, but He has a justice and redemption plan for humanity.

In one part of his prayer for recovery and reconciliation King David said, “…I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psalms 51:5). This is a difficult passage that has nothing to do with any wrongdoing of his mother, but speaks to the reality that without God ruling in our lives, sin will permeate our very essence. Psalms 58:3 says, “The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.” Jesus is the holistic remedy to our sin tendency.

Evil will always be with us, but there is an answer. Some question why God would allow the devil to exist or remain. I heard a man the other day explain that God cannot kill the devil or remove him; for in doing that he would also have to remove or kill humanity because the evils of Satan are often contrived and carried out through us. So if God emphatically removed evil, He would have to remove His human creation. Thus instead, He allowed His Son to become the sacrifice for all of humanity.

David said he was born and shaped in iniquity or sin. We live in a world today where many exclaim, “I was born this way.” The truth is, we were all “born this way!” We were all born vulnerable to the sinful toxins and lusts of the world that invisibly float like airborne pathogens, unleashed and guided by the prince and power of the air. Like disease, we all are susceptible to sin, Shapen in Iniquity.

I was listening to a radio program and a lady was describing her conversion out of lesbianism. As her male friend started reading the Bible with her more and more, her then lesbian romantic partner noticed a change in her and it sparked a deeper conversation. The now married Christian woman said to her partner “What if it’s true? What if the Bible is true?” She could not shake or escape that question. It haunted her psyche and it ultimately led to her conversion in Christ and now her ministry, helping others who walk in her former lifestyle compassionately learn more about a Life-Changing Christ.

It’s not about “I was born this way.” We all were born this way. The critical reality is, You must be born again (John 3:3). The world is overly focusing on and celebrating the wrong birth. We were shapen in iniquity and need to be born again, so Remember, you are the clay In The Potter’s Hands and God has paved a way to save you today!
